Pittsburgh Gazette Times -- August 27, 1911 WEE BABY IS TOSSED TO SAFETY BY MOTHER

CANONSBURG, Pa., Aug. 27 - A thrilling incident of the theater disaster of Saturday night was that of a woman with a baby clasped in her arms, who sought safety by a fire escape, and who was seen by the crowd behind which also surged towards the same object. The mother, seeing the oncoming crush and thinking she would be thrown from the iron ladder, tossed her child far out into empty space over the heads of hundreds who blocked the streets below. By a marvel of good fortune one of the spectators of the desperate act caught the falling child in his arms and saved its life. The mother was also saved.
